Abel Tasman’s Discovery of New Zealand

Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer who was the first European to discover New Zealand. He named it Staten Land. He sailed around the outskirts of the land and mapped the country.

Later , Dutch cartographers renamed it Nieuw Zeeland after the province the came from , Zeeland

Even later on , a British explorer named Captain Cool was the first European to set foot on the land and renamed it New Zealand to anglicise

This is a meaning of what Matariki or a story

In Maori, Matariki means ‘tiny eyes’ or ‘eyes of God’. The children of the earth mother Papatuanuku and sky father, Ranginui, were divided over whether to separate them and bring light and life to the earth. Eventually, Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, laid on his back and used his feet to force them apart.

There are different stories about Matariki but one Māori myth is that when Ranginui the sky father and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children the god of the winds Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens creating MatarikiI knew this story for ages.
